Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced via Telegram that the South Bridge had been hit by a new Russian airstrike, while city authorities reported one dead and two injured in a separate strike on a residential building. According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the strike hit a 25-story apartment building in the Darnytska area, causing a fire on the 24th and 25th floors, which was extinguished over an area of 120 square meters. The area of destruction is estimated at 40 square meters. “Rescuers freed two injured people and handed them over to medical staff. The body of the deceased was found during the extinguishing operations. Six other people were evacuated,” the statement said.

The attack was not isolated. Yesterday, Thursday, Russian drones struck a school in Kyiv, as well as the South Bridge over the Dnipro River, causing fires in the city, as Moscow continues its almost daily strikes against Ukraine. According to the BBC, this is the first time since the start of the war that Kyiv’s bridges have been targeted by Russian attacks, marking a new phase in Russian operations.

Traffic on the South Bridge, as well as on the Paton Bridge, has been halted in both directions, according to Kyiv authorities. According to Klitschko, a fire broke out on the upper floors of the residential building and damage was also reported in another area of Kyiv, where drone debris fell in an open area in the Holosiivskyi district, causing damage to windows of a non-residential building and several cars. The South Bridge is one of the main arteries connecting the eastern and western parts of the Ukrainian capital across the Dnipro. According to the Kyiv Post, the Ukrainian Air Force shot down or suppressed 88 of the 108 drones launched by Russia during the night.

For its part, Russia confirmed that during the night it launched drone strikes against military targets and infrastructure, including a road and a railway bridge over the Dnipro River in Kyiv, a power substation in the Kyiv region, and an industrial facility at the port of Izmail in the Odesa region. The Russian Ministry of Defense clarified that the bridge was used for transporting troops and military cargo to Ukrainian forces in the Donbas region, while the port of Izmail was used for military cargo and supplies.
